I'm trying to make GTA IV work and it's beginning to piss me off.

It doesn't 'just' work.

I've got win XP SP2 and a DX9 video card.

I read somewhere in sys req.s that you need SP3
- tried to install it but for whatever reason this ver of SP3 wouldnt install on my ver of Win XP - debugging thing or some chit.
- changed SP number from 2 to 3 with regedit (following advice http://tehparadox.com/forum/f18/change- ... iv-203771/ )

Then following some other advice I:
- installed Rockstar Social Club
- installed 1.03 patch for GTA IV
- uninstalled Rockstar Social Club
- copied three 'fix' files to my GTA folder
- changed launchGTA file to run in compatible mode (win2k)
- ran the 'launch' file

still doesn't work
error mess. says to reinstall directx and/or video drivers, so I:
- reinstalled DirectX - using install file from the GTA disc
- got latest offical drivers for my card and installed them

needless to say I rebooted my rig after each significat change

still doesn't fucking work, still same error message.

Tips? Sarcasm?

Edit:
Ok so I even changed registry back to SP2 and downloaded SP3 from MS site and installed it, rebooted - still the same error for fucks sake :gnasher:

I was a lucky one, myself. Worked on first try (Vista), no issues whatsoever.

I've heard that the legit versions tend to be a bit flunky, but cracking the game might do the trick. Why not give it a try?

Didn't notice the '' around the word fix. Gotcha.

Maybe it's just time to upgrade? To Vista or 7, mebbe?

yeah, maybe :sadblinky:
tried vista a bit on a laptop and I hate it.
I think I'll go for w7 64b soon. Too bad, I'm a win2k man in my heart :salute:

but the game should work on XP SP3 anyway.

I got the illegit version a while ago, installed the patch, installed and uninstalled Social Club, upgraded to SP3(no regedit crap, but the official upgrade). The game works perfectly(eventually got bored with it, but that's another matter). So essentially I followed the same steps. Difference is, I have Vista.

I have Vista and GTA IV was a bitch to install. It took me a good couple of hours of research to find out how to make it work. After trying just about everything anyone has done to make it work, I finally found a correct answer. Needless to say, game devs these days really need to pull their head out of their asses, not one single answer on how to correct the shitty installation came from a dev or tester. :censored:

possibly the assumption is if you're not a console kiddie you're a computer geek and you make it work somehow

btw, pardon my ignorance but does vista = DX10? Just wondering if it's my DX9 that the game fails on (despite it's supposed to work with it)

I'm not sure if Vista = DX10, but at least I've got it installed and running... Go with the flow man, and it comes with the times B)

Vista is the only OS that supports DX10. If you haven't installed a game that has DX10 shaders/pixilation, then you will need to DL it from DirectX.

Games with DX10 shaders:

GTA IV
DeadSpace
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ClearSky
Prototype
Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
Rise of the Argonaughts
Crysis

Just a few to boot.

And no.... the game does not fail on the DX9..... it just doesn't look as good.

How the fuck was I supposed to know your broke ass couldn't afford a DX10 GFX card? I do hope you know that you can get a DX10 supported card for about sixty bucks. :pelvic_thrust:

Damn shame, "bucks" are the new currency In the failing global economy.... Maybe that explains why you are broke and can't upgrade. If you could pay "bucks" to upgrade your attitude, that would be great too. Ahew :drunk:
