MMOGs = Massively Big Suckage?

to get back on topic:
When I was younger, and the first mmorpg:s came out on the market, I though "Awesome, this is the real shit"
But, after haveing seen frieds and such play mmomomomorpgs, another thought came over me:
"pointless"
Running around among other ppl, with no plot, no sence of purpose aside from trying to look cool and mighty to other players, who don't give a shit how you look since they are to busy looking mighty themselves.
Anyway that was how it seemed to me.
So, why play any mmorpg?
I found no reason to, since I don't want/need to look mighty and I do prefer to have some purpose in the RPG:s I play.

Offcourse some people want the social interaction with other people, but for $10/month, one can find better ways to interact. Forums are free, and then one get money to waste on other things.
Such as whores, drugs and legal fees.

Some would say, if players play right, it will feel like an RPG. But hey, since most of the people are assholes, no one bothers to role-play. Then the game turns like mismatch said.

Nobody's mentioned Final Fantasy 11!?!? Sure, it's not all that revolutionary (IMO, MMORPG's are MMORPG's, regardless of the brand-name), but its fun to play for $13 USD/month. SquareEnix puts out one major update every month, so there's always new stuff to do/see/kill/get.

Plus, there's a new expansion pack coming out in October... *slobber*

EDIT: But of course, 90% of the people who play FFXI and are under level 30 or so are 15 year olds, but once you get over level 30, the quality of the people skyrocket.

I confess to playing FFXI(Alexander, for those interested), the game is fun. Sure a lot of the people are 12 year olds who make variations of sephiroth for each of their names, but I have a ton of local friends who I do LANs with and have met some pretty cool guys while I wander about online. The expansion is going to open up a ton of new areas for the middle-high levels so that things arenÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t quite as choked and may add one or two new classes. Looks good too, heres a couple of screenshots of me doing stuff.

What I hate about MMORPGs is the time you gotta waste on levelling to be competitive in PvP. I heard FF11 was ultra fucking long.

I've got a friend who's hooked on FFXI, and to me the game doesn't look very good. He says he's going to switch to WoW when it comes out. I bet WoW is going to steal a lot of FFXI's revenue, expansion or not.

FFXI isn't that great. Its just like every other MMORPG on the market, although I have to admit, its not bad. City of Heroes is alot better.

I play FFXI. I enjoy it. It's very Final Fantasy-esque combat. That's not a good thing, however, simply because an "MMORPG" to be true tot he words cannot exist. A good "MMORPG" should be an action game, about the fighting. If you want an RPG you will play a single player game where you can more easily follow the plot and follow a variety of characters in a world that changes directly because of your impact. MMORPGs can't offer that. They offer fighting, and lots of it. FFXI is kind of dry in that respect. Beautiful graphics, etc, etc, but combat lacks. I will probably switch to City of Heros sooner or later because I hear that it is action-oriented.

Just so I'm sure we're on the same page, define "Final Fantasy-esque" combat, because it plays just about like every other MMORPG of that type. The only differant is a menu pops up.

In my mind, FF combat is 3v3 static combat with menus. I'm a huge fan of all FFs, Tactics included, but I didn't like FFXI. An MMORPG just can't be FF. Final Fantasy is all about the story.

I like japanese animation, a lot. But Final Fantasy is mostly about the story. At least for me. Also the blend of fantasy and guns.

Thats what really let me down in FFXI. I wanted a FF6-FF7 esque setting. High tech. Gunners instead of archers, fighting robots, black magic and the joys of electrical spells on machines.

All FFs were excellent, and some of my favorite games. I just replayed FF7 and it's amazing. I could never get into FFX. I played around 18 hours as of now, and I never really want to continue.

In the many hours I've spent over at Jet's house, I actually did beat FFX using his roommates playstation. I donÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t recommend it unless you have a bent for predictable plots and anticlimactic endings. The two minutes I played X-2 had me screaming in outrage.

Most of the FF games are quality work, but hardly the best games I've played. I'll take Earthbound (mother 1 or 2) over any of them.

What "human factor"? You need to remember that these are MMORPG-playing humans. Unless you're playing with people you actually know and love, that doesn't seem to deliver much, and it tends to take away from the immersion (MMORPGers rarely stay in character believably, or however you want to put it).

I never really liked FF. It has some good qualities, but there's too much cheese for me.
