Read, "Bolo: The Annals of the Dinochrome Brigade" by kieth laumer, its actually multiple short stories, but they're pretty awesome.

Night of the Trolls is pretty Post Apoc.

Bolo collects some of Laumer's short stories set in a future where a series of increasingly large, smart tanks dominate land warfare. The human characters aren't well developed, which is okay since the Bolo units are the focus. The stories answer questions such as: Are they loyal and if so, to whom? What happens when they are no longer needed? When they deteriorate and become insane? This is a fun book, and the plots have stood the test of time even if a lot of the details have not.

Sounds pretty shitty to me.
