Here's what I use:

Avast! Anti-virus - it's an antivirus duh what can i say.
CCleaner - cleans all useless shit and registry entries from your computar
Firefox - plus add-ons like cookiesafe, adblock+ and shit like that fuck micro$oft fuck tha world
HiJackThis! - a great malware hijacker etc scanner
HostsMan - keeps hosts file updated, helps block ads, hijackers, 3rd party cookies etc
KeePass - keeps my passwords safe and shit
PeerGuardian - hbo dont see im downloading their stuff i guess
ProcessGuard - protects from keyloggers rootkits hooks trojans etc
SnoopFree - see above
Spybot S&D - scans for and blocks spyware and things like that
SpywareBlaster - see above
ZoneAlarm - software firewall ok

oh ya all the software = free
takes a smart nigga to hack my porn! so stay safe stay out of trouble kids, holla, big pappa out!
any suggestions / things to add?

how do you know if you don't have them?

i suppose if you don't have much to lose then it doesn't matter but i for instance have loads of important shit on my hdd plus big moniez on the internetz.

uniblue spy eraser/registry booster (pretty good actually, like an improved version of cc cleaner but with a gay, bubbly, "user friendly" interface)

all that stuff is cracked, i dont pay $$$$$ for 0s and 1s & it's good performance wise. but am i at risk hombre?

Well that depends. I have plenty of money on e-wallets and poker sites across the internet, plus I use internet banking and things like that, so I want to keep my passwords safe. KeePass is a password safe that lets you store your passwords in an encrypted file, you can then use auto-fill forms function or copy-paste from there so that keyloggers won't catch anything. Good way to create 20-character passwords you don't need to remember. I would suggest getting SnoopFree too, the text on the site is a bit yadda yadda but the program is handy, especially against hooks, keyloggers, things like that. But this depends on your needs, if you don't have any vital shit when it comes to passwords then you probably won't need these. I'd still get SnoopFree at least though, it only takes like 4MB ram and got this crazy-ass eyes icon in the tray.

I suggest you download HiJackThis!, run the scan, go to Merijn.org and check out the lists provided if there's anything suspicious there, mebbe do this every once in a while

I'm behind a router firewall and use AVG free virus scanner. I also use Firefox and have spy bot search and destroy that I run rarely. Most of the stuff it finds is really miner like trackers and stuff. My password system is kinda messed up cause a lot of times I forget my password to a site and don't want firefox to remeber it because if I type it wrong I will have to do more work to get it out. For important sites I will usually try to log in manually and keep everything minor on auto login in. I do copy my CC info from one website and use it for anytime I need to fill in my CC because I'm too lazy to get my wallet and I don't remember all the details on it.

I also have adaware but I don't really use it and its probably out of date.

i use vista and opera. no realtime anti-virus and no third party firewall. i occasionally run anti-virus and anti-adware searches, but they never find anything.

Firefox + antivirus. Ccleaner and ad-aware scans never find any shit on my computer. I'm so badass I don't care about Internet security, even though I mostly run my finances online.

I'd say that it's actually easier to install using a standard non-live CD. However, if you want to persist, continue reading.

Ubuntu appears to have a fairly straightforward installation. It's not as easy as, say, openSUSE (which has traditionally been easy to install and configure - I use this on my desktop as a dual boot), but it's easier than straight Debian (which mainly relies on the command-line, and is pretty damned hardcore when it comes to configuring - I use this on my laptop).

When you place the CD into the drive at startup, make sure your BIOS is set to have the CD as the first booting drive, then select "Start or install Ubuntu" at the CD boot menu. Ubuntu will load off the Live CD, leaving you with a GNOME window with two icons on the screen. One of these will be marked "Install"; click on it once (GNOME and KDE, the main Linux desktop environments, use single click rather than double click). The first few options should be simple to figure out if you've installed any operating system before. Eventually, you'll come to a partitioning screen. Choose the 80GB partition that you have to spare; Ubuntu will separate it into storage and swap as appropriate. If you want, you can manually edit the partitioning table; this is more appropriate for people who know Linux a bit better.

The rest of the initial installation is pretty simple. When your computer reboots, pick Ubuntu from the startup menu. Visit this URL for information on how to install packages from there (Choose anything GCC for hardcoreness!):

ok here's a few tips.

as regards free antyvirus, the choice is mostly between avast!4home and AVG. avast does the job reall good and has many useful features but allegedly uses more system resources than AVG and possibly slows down your Wingross a tiny bit - personally I've never noticed it though. ACG by the way of comparison is 'light' - it won't make your megahurz work harder but it's missing some good features such as scanning P2P downloading content and IMessengers.

In the department of firewalls, many people will be happy with windows' firewall or their router's firewall. Well it works for some average kid-hackers, but there are things only 'real' firewall can give you. If you want to block a troyan which is not yet in your antyvirus' database and it's trying to contact the Net, if you want to block some cracked software trying to contact manufacturer's site - firewall is the way to go. My tip is kerio PF (good and free) and I see some people use ZoneAlarm.

Time for anty-spyware. Yeah it's useful. Especially if you use P2P and visit astalavista and such. My tip is Spybot S&D. It also has a very useful feature of system registry guard - no program can change your registry without your permission (you can create white-lists) but you can do this with different software (e.g. System Mechanic).
A well known alternative for Spybot is adaware. HijackThis! detects more threats than those two and is more exact, but less user friendly - you need to go to a website for the scan-log interpretation and deal with the effects on your own. To fight adware also clean your browser cookied every now and again and disable scripts when going to dodgy websites (noScript for Firefox).

Moreover, it's good to have a backup copy of your windows registry (in case of virus/malware infection) and keep the registry clean and defragmented btw (for system stability).

I've never used PeerGuardian but it sounds useful

I think the best/cheapest solution for the average user is to download a free software firewall and set up NAT in your router, that should do a good job on keeping them pesky script kiddies away.

and keep the registry clean and defragmented btw (for system stability).

how do you defrag registry?
