How useful is this skill? I never put any points into it, and I seem to do just fine. Does it only affect the chance to have random encounters? Is there really any reason to build it up?

It's good if you just want to travel about the world map without much hassle.

If you play on a fast computer, you get very few random encounters so there's no reason to spent a single skill point on this.Plus, you can buy books to boost it,if you want.

It's garbage. BIS didn't balance the skills at all. SPECIAL still rules though.

If it's high enough, it'll come in handy a couple times in Fallout 2, I believe. But yeah, worthless.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.
