Book 1, The Hard Goodbye. And so far, it's pretty good. Pulpy, and with some mighty cheeseball dialogue, but I suppose that's the idea.

The whole thing makes me reluctant to see the movie, if only because I can't imagine it being as good on screen.

Why are you reluctant to see the move, but happily throw your money away on Gwen Stefani and Garbage albums or Be Cool or whatever the fuck.

It's not about the money, doofus. I don't want to see it for the same reason I ususally don't want to see movie adaptations before I've read the book first.
