Supervolcano

Post by Artkill »

Did anyone watch this on Discovery last night? I think you guys would like it.

It's a show about Yellowstone erupting, creating the worl'd largest known eruption and killing millions, creating another iceage and all that good stuff.

Yes, a delightful scenario by any measure ! I look forward to it wholeheartedly. I have always enjoyed cold weather immensely. And now ! And now, it will be eclipsed by my adoration of mass death and suffering. :drunk:

From what I've read, such events are quite common on the geological time scale.

Well according to geological history, Yellowstone has had a supervolcanic eruption three times, each about 600 million years apart, according to statistics we are due for another....
From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.

Yeah but I am sure we would have some advanced warning at least. I doubt personally that the world's largest volcanic eruption could gather and explode without some accompanying tremors or minor eruptions along the way.

If I'm not mistaken isn't Yellowstone reasonably dead, at the moment?

Except for the geysers. Hmm.

It is 'dormant' but not extinct, dormant just means that it has not erupted in a long time, but according to history that does not mean it wont erupt again.

There is a hot-spot of magma under yellowstone, and something like a large earthquake could trigger it into a supervolcano, one 6,000 times Mt St Helens

Give heavy industry enough time. Regardless, you might be surprised at the variety we get down here.
