I haven't watched the films themselves, but the bonus disk in the set is interesting. the preview of episode 3 makes it look pretty good, actually.
And the interviews with lucas have him saying how he hates having people interefere with his work and tell him what to do and place restrictions... I guess his tampering with the original films is part of that, him creating the vision he wanted to.

I don't buy this whole "artist presenting his vision the way he wants" crapola. I think once a director, artist, writer, or any other creative individual releases his work to the public, it becomes theirs, in a sense. Once someone has paid to see a movie, that movie shouldn't be tampered with, by the director or anyone else. Lucas needs to get over the fact that CGI wasn't around in the '70s and just let the damn Star Wars movies stay the way they are. Cripes, they've garnered one of the biggest cult followings in all of pop culture, and not a dash of CGI (or OMG!Extended!Bonus!Footage!) was needed. Move the hell on, Lucas.

And that goes double for you, Spielberg.

A well put together preview could make dry anal rape look good, it doesn't mean that it will be good, but it does make it look like a hoot.

I actually have it on good authority that Episode 3 is going to be good. I'm not sure how, but I trust the source (Matthew Woodring Stover, who got a copy of the script about a year ago). He says it will make everyone favorably re-evaluate the first two episodes.

If you've ever read any of Stover's novels, you'll know exactly why I trust his judgement.

Say what you will about the changes pro & con, but DAMN these movies look good on DVD!

ANH for the most part looks like it was filmed LAST WEEK. Amazingly clear & beautiful, probably second only to Monsters, Inc in terms of video quality.

Gotta try these puppies out on my dad's DLP TV. Although, they had a 61" on sale at Best Buy the other day for $4299.... hmmmmm ;) "Oh, sweetheart, can I buy a present for us?"

I haven't got around to watching the films themselves yet, just the bonus disk. What did you think of the changes Lucas made (like inserting the new darth vader over the old actor from the originals)? I think stuff like having the emperor replacing the stand-in actor for episode V is a good move, but I'm undecided on replacing the original darth vader... :|

It truly is an "accidental masterpiece". How sad.

For the most part, the SE changes didn't really bother me. The two exceptions were Greedo Shoots First and Luke Screams in ESB. The dance number in Jabba's palace in all honesty wasn't that much over-the-top IMO than the original dance number -- just add a couple CGI characters. Wasn't a huge fan of the original dance number anyway. And Oola's boob still pops out when she falls into the Rancor pit.

I was surprised when the SE's were released that they hadn't replaced the Emperor in ESB with Ian Macdiarmid -- so I'm glad for that change as well. As far as seeing Hayden Christensen as Anakin's spirit at the end, supposedly Episode III will tell us why this is. I have some ideas as to why this would be, and have read some speculation, but we'll see what ends up happening.

Greedo doesn't shoot first anymore -- he and Han fire at basically the same time. It's probably better than Greedo shooting first, but Lucas really should have just gone back to the original of Han shooting first. However, while Han shooting first definitely makes him more of a badass, I don't think that him NOT shooting first changes the overall story. It's bad, but not a showstopper.

Luke's scream as he throws himself off the gantry in Cloud City in ESB, on the other hand, was the change I despised most in the SE's. Luke has just found out the galaxy's most evil villain is his FATHER, and rather than join him, he throws himself off the gantry to certain doom. It's a very powerful moment -- but having Luke scream belittled that, made it a joke. I am SO glad that was removed.

Everything else is pretty much cosmetic.

I didn't know about the scream. Did Mark Hamil come into to record a new scream in 1997 or something?
As for the Greedo thing, from what I understand it was to make the film less dark - you can't have a hero shooting someone if they don't shoot first.
And I'll have to watch out for that boob shot. The advantage of being able to move the picture frame by frame....

EDIT: I'm watching episode IV now, you're right the picture quality is fantastic.

EDIT#2: and after watching Episode II, it gives me hope for III. There are some nasty bits, such as the anakin/padame-thing romance which just makes me cringe, but it's still a good, watchable film.
