Besides, faith is fundamental to humans, it gives security. Also, not all people are made for thinking and finding their own beliefs by themselves, I think, so most people just take the easy way out, by simply believing stuff, believing that they live in a democracy, believing in science, believing in atheism etc.
Even if one disproved "God" there will just be other ideas, cults or sects to replace him. What Blargh said.

missing the point much? religious beliefs are arational - there's no way to cast believing in god as being rational or irrational, and it always guts me when someone accuses me of being irrational for being an athiest. sure, the degree to which you act on your beliefs is a question of rationality, but (1) few have ever seriously argued the contrary [and never in logical terms afaik] and (2) you're preaching to the choir, this is the internet for fuck's sake. also, it sounds like you're understanding what it is to believe in something in very poor, absolutist terms -- a lot of scientists (or proles for that matter) don't "believe in science" in the idolatrous way you're implying for example. ditto athiests or those who think that democracy is an okay system.

sounds like you don't like him very much? aquinas' arguments about god are by and large just used as an explanatory mechanism for how he proposed religion ought to be married with science. from his beliefs he inferred very little about how people ought to live their lives. i'd say he did a lot more for the philosophy of science (in a renaissance sense) than any other medieval guy did, he's an important thinker.
